'The McCalmans' have been performing for ......well, um, quite a long time.
Ian McCalman (Lasswade), Nick Keir (Edinburgh) and Stephen Quigg (Saltcoats) all sing and play
instruments, sometimes simultaneously. Ian writes songs. Nick writes songs. Stephen doesn’t
write songs but cleverly compensates by being younger. They also collect and sing traditional
and contemporary material from Scotland (occasionally beyond) with unique harmony and idiosyncratic
presentation. Their songs wryly observe all things Scottish without losing sight of world events,
serious and funny.
The Macs have recorded 285 songs and countless radio and T.V series. They’ve
toured the world in every direction, heading the bill at London’s Albert Hall and the
smallest of folk clubs. They have sung in deserts, jungles, arctic wastes and remote islands,
taking their music to anyone who will listen and their most recent album, 'Scots Abroad'
earned the review, 'good humour, professionalism and consummate musicianship, a clutch of
new songs... right up there at the top of their game.
